Science has known since the mid 1930’s that alcoholism (and addiction to many other substances) has a strong physical component. That is, when a person begins to abuse alcohol or other drugs, something changes in his or her brain chemistry. This change in brain chemistry, causes the person to be compelled to continue to abuse. Research has shown that inefficient manufacturing cells in the brain cause this compulsion. Additional research indicates some people are born with these inefficient manufacturing brain cells. When the brain is unable to produce the required levels of chemicals naturally, an individual often learns to self-medicate with alcohol and other substances. What is actually required are additional “raw materials” used by the brain to produce normal brain chemistry. In 1985, NeuroGenesis, introduced the nutritional products, Neu-Replenish and Neu-Relieve, which provide the necessary “raw materials” to help the brain produce normal levels of brain chemicals. Neu-Replenish is a product developed to help the individual recovering from the abuse of stimulant drugs such as amphetamines, cocaine, etc.
from: “Neuro-Nutrient Therapy For Compulsive Disease:
Rationale and Clinical Evidence” Scientists have now concluded that compulsive craving for alcohol or drugs in most instances has a genetic origin that is triggered by environmental factors. The mechanism appears to be irregularities in the brain’s neuro-transmitters, the messenger substances that regulate behavior. Addiction occurs when there is an imbalance that affects neurons in the brain’s reward areas. The authors present the Cascade Theory of neuro-transmitter function, suggesting that these substances and their enzymes act in a cascade fashion—a kind of chain reaction—to produce feelings of well being. If the cascade becomes unbalanced, craving and addiction develop. Since neuro-transmitters are made of amino acids, the nutritional factor takes on great significance. “Amino acid loading” is mentioned as a method by which additional supplies of amino acid building blocks are provided, enabling the brain to manufacture substances that are deficient.
